Although Boone was not the first to design these bars he was the first to do it in an aerodynamic way. Boone used his knowledge and experience from downhill skiing, aerodynamics and his personal race experience in cycling to help with his invention of the aero bars.
the bars are a over the front of the frame design which is designed to relieve the weight of the back an place it on the bars. this design helped keep a low head, horizontal torso and the positioning of the pads helped keep a narrow profile, all these help reduce drag.
Boone pat tended his bars in 1987. the already famous skiing and snowboarding brand SCOTT created these bars by way of licensing agreement. in 1989 Greg Lemond (the first American to win the Tour de France) used these bars on his time trial bike which was instrumental to his success. Boone's original design has since been modified in its twenty seven years existence including s-bends, Gear and brake levers on the bars for easy access, from hand built alloy to moulded carbon fibre. These modern aero bars are now a mainstream item in time trial cycling today.
